Central Park

Does anyone know about the park being closed at sunset?  The police told my husband he could not park there last night that
the park is closed at sunset.  He was watching our grandson walk with his friends through the park and on their way home about
8:30. They were stopped by the police and told to get out park is closed.

There is one little sign over on Walnut Street side stating that park is closed at dark.  If you don't know it is there you will never
see the sign and since I always thought it was a public park, can they close it?  Wasn't sure if anyone else knows this.

Re: Central Park

Not sure why they are closing the park at dusk, but, there has been a lot of issues check out the police logs  went for a walk there a while ago, you have to make your way around kids in the middle of sidewalk, language is something else too.  Can't imagine the elderly feeling too comfortable there these days.  Is St. John's gym closed?  Why is this the new hangout?

Re: Central Park

I myself noticed many teens (mostly with "punk"/"emo" clothing on, skateboards, swearing, smoking, etc etc etc going on now all the time in the park. We avoid it now on our walks to the library.

Re: Central Park

Seems to me it's better to have kids hanging in an area that's easily monitored, like the park.  And they have to hang somewhere!

Where are we going?....and what's with this handbasket?

Re: Central Park

Just because the way a kid looks you are going judge them?  Because  they skate board or are "punk or Emo" they are bad.  Sounds pretty biased,  almost like assuming what you read in the paper about someone is always right

When they're smoking, swearing and being generally disrespectful to passersby, then yeah, I'm going to judge them.  Then I'm also going to make a comment about where are the parents when their kids are out doing this crap?  I can speak from personal experience walking through the park that I have had walk around these knuckleheads because they refuse to move out of the way on the sidewalk.

The town has no right to close the park. We own it, we all should be able to use it.

If there are kids or adults or crazy people with dogs there, so be it. Unless they are breaking the law in some way, they have as much right to use the park as anyone else.

The last I heard,  "hanging out" wasn't a  crime!

"Loitering" is arbitrary- They can't say "no loitering" in a public park. in essence, that is what a park is for.

Which, in essence, means that *all* should be able to enjoy it...I can't enjoy the park when I have to listen to these teenage ingrates talking about what girl they just 'effed'....  (true story and they used the expletive)

I just don't go there anymore which is sad because like every other taxpayer in this town, I pay for the upkeep of the park and should be able to enjoy it.

Re: Central Park

@emt8672

First of all, I didn't judge them by appearance, but I did write it that way. Look... first of all, these "kids" were swearing and smoking at what appears to be abut 15 years of age. That alone does qualify me to judge. Secondly, hanging out does NOT in any way break any laws in my book, but when you have several groups, all smoking and swearing and wearing clothing that only means you are a rule breaker (and honestly emo means just that) then yes, you should not be in an area such as a public park where others want to enjoy the place.

I have three young children, and if I walk through the park when even one of these kids are hanging out, I know 100% of the time from experience (and believe me I've given them more than several chances) will swear and smoke in front of my kids, I will say I've had enough of this generational crap of being stupid and doing nothing more than smoking and not given a crap about others.

And to top it off, one of the groups broke a beer bottle (dead center of the park) on our first night last season at the block dance. The police picked it up, and kicked what they could into the grass, then without even checking on the kids walked back to the police station to enjoy the music. The issue wasn't the cops, they even know with all the crazy kids roaming around there is no way to find who was drinking during a kids event. That sir is SAD!

And I'm guessing with a handle such as 'EMT' you may be one, therefore you perhaps have seen one or several cases in which these kids have gotten to drunk and done some stupid crap.

Very good Dan...I have to agree with everything you said.....I'm hearing that some seniors are afraid to walk and enjoy the park because of these kids.....

went by the park last night - police were in the parking lot with lights on and no one was in the park?  The big mistake was bringing the Block dances back there should have left them at the school, when they are over the kids leave.  The old saying give them an inch they'll take a yard.

Re: Central Park

What else do the kids/teens have to do in town during evenings around here?
In the 90's, we just hung out in our backyards or walked/biked around for the day/evening until dinner was ready. We never hung out in the park or on street corners.

I'll say this though; at least the teens are outside in the fresh air (minus the cig smoke) instead of in there rooms playing video games all day.

I would rather have them outside in the park, feet from the Police station, than vandalizing cars, neighborhoods or worse. Again, the park is FOR EVERYONE.  If you see something going on there that shouldn't be, call the police (like breaking beer bottles in the middle of the park). But if they are just hanging around, then they are not breaking the law, and they have a right, just like everyone else to be in the park. If you don't like what they are saying, don't listen. In fact, the less of an audience you give them, the more likely they are not to act out at all.

Sounds to me like some of you have some "prejudice" going on here. You want to complain about what is ruining our park?? Try the dog poop and the butts (left behind mostly by adults I may add).

But to get back to the original reason for this thread- The park should be available to all, no matter what the hour, not closing at dusk. As long as whomever goes there does not break the law.

Last time I checked; cussing loudly in public, grouping around as much as to prevent others from passing through on the walkway, smoking while under 18, are not permitted by law. Some may see these as petty issues (I myself don't see anything petty in quality of life), and may not be taken very seriously by the police. But they are breaking the law and if you place a call to the police they have a duty to act. I rarely visit the park and honestly don't care what they do or say around me. If I had kids or elderly with me, or I witnessed somebody being intimidated or subject to any abuse I would feel completely different. I would not hesitate to call the cops and people should if it is really this bad.

Yes- If it really IS that bad, people should call the police. But again, since there have not been any major issues in the park ( at least not any that are in the police logs I have read) then the park should not be closed at dusk.

Re: Central Park

I was referring to when they drop f-bombs loudly then scream it while laughing and smoking in the middle of a walk way when my young children are walking to the library. If I swore loudly with kids around I'd be in more trouble than these kids would be which is a double standard for immature minors.

I'm not against free space such as the park, it's great that the kids are outside, but the park is no place to be skateboarding with your pants off your butt while smoking and swearing. The park is for everyone Mariah, however it's for everyone to "enjoy"

Yes, you are right and they should be able to enjoy it on THEIR time, not on hours deemed necessary by the P&R. Which is again, the reason for this thread...not to single out groups or to criticize.

Re: Central Park

I remember in the 70's when you would find hundreds of kids on High St..   You could never hang out in Central Park at night.  They have the old sign that is fadded(No Tresspassing After Dark) on the Walnut Side of the park and a new one that I just saw the other day.  The reason for this I read some time ago in the Item.  Central Park was given to the town with conditions from the Foster family(not 100 percent on the family).  One of the conditions was that it be closed after dark.  Another was no organized ball playing.  This has turned into any ball playing which I don't think is correct.

I have also noticed the skate kids.  They don't get out of the way and they have bent the signs in front of the assisted living building.  I walked through the park and these kids would not get out of the path.  Very rude!  The parents of these kids have brought up some real zero's!

Re: Central Park

It's not always the parents fault. I have raised 3 boys, 2 are very respectful, and one is one of those zeros you speak of. All 3 were raised in the exact same way.
